With Phil (mostly...) and Tim. We started the ride in pouring rain which continued on and off until about 2pm - properly wet! After crossing the A593 (and saying bye to Phil) the weather improved and became sunny/cloudy but dry for the rest of the ride. Managed to cycle 90% of the smooth section after the gate on the final climb, just had to walk the steep section before the corner at the top. But it was a wasted effort. 5 Weeks ago we noticed they'd started 'repairing' the track down to Coniston, but there were still plenty of good bits - not any more! The very top is smooth mud, then theres a little of the old track, but the first steep zigzag corner is completely gone, and from there to after the little bridge is smooth as a towpath, and at least 6 feet wide all the way down. Very very fast, but not in the slightest bit technical. The pinch point is stil there, but the rocky drops before it ave been leveled. Thats the last time I'll be riding Walna :(
Looks like the gps elevation went a bit bonkers unfortunately.
With Dave, Jonathan, Nic and Rob. A good ride, great weather.
Half way down Walna, from perhaps half a mile before the bridge to the bridge, the track has been 'sanitised' (as in, you truly could get a wheelchair along it!). The top section and below the bridge havnt been touched and the two little pinch points are still good, but its a bit of a shame.
A good route, but I will be doing it the other way round next time - I reckon that will be far more rewarding. Going up Walna Scar to go down the smooth descent into Seathwaite was a complete waste! The same round the other side too - the descent into Seathwaite from the south would be far more interesting than climbing out that way
